Why Volunteer?

The Role

We simply wouldn’t be able to run our events without the support of our fantastic marshals who run the top and bottom of each race stage, safely manage riders crossings of footpaths or tracks and help with car parking. It’s a brilliant day out, with the chance to chat and have fun with the riders and spectators, who consistently tell us how great the marshals are and really make the day.

As a thank you, our fantastic sponsor Bike Bothy Beyond will provide you some snacks and a drink for your rucksack, to keep you going during the day. We will also provide you a hot drink and bacon roll in the morning, as well as some hot food when you return from the hill. There will be a few cool prizes for a marshal’s draw at each event and any marshal who volunteers for 3 or more events will be given a fantastic free “Ride Aberdeenshire” T-shirt.

So if you love mountain biking (or love someone who does) but don’t intend to race,  come along and get involved as a marshal. We’d can’t wait to meet you.

Info & Briefing

Prior to the race all registered marshals will:

  • be sent a comprehensive general marshal’s briefing email

  • provided information on where you will be deployed during the event. This considers your experience and any constraints eg arriving late or needing to leave early (so let us know)

  • be asked to join an Event specific Marshal’s Whats App group (which greatly helps with comms)

On the day you will be asked to join the general marshals briefing, when you will be:

  • provided event specific info, taking into account on the day conditions. late changes etc.

  • given information on logistics eg how to get  to and from your particular designated location

  • provided your loan kit

  • able to ask any questions

Some marshals may then be given individual further briefings on matters such as stage specific set up or other issues to be aware of.

Marshals are stationed at the top and bottom of each race stage, as well as at any forest road or footpath crossings. Marshals are there to ensure the event runs safely, smoothly and enjoyably by:

  • Ensuring any spectators or members of the public are made aware of the event and kept clear of the track being raced

  • Ensuring that riders are set off at safe intervals (min 20 secs apart) but efficiently, to get everyone around the course in good time

  • Ensuring that riders clear the bottom of a stage to avoid riders behind coming through the finish line

  • Providing information and advice to riders and ensuring the comply with the rules eg wearing required protection, not littering or riding in an overly aggressive manner

  • Working with other stage marshals and the lead marshal to handle any incidents or accidents, including stopping the race and summonsing help if needed

  • Deploying and retrieving the timing systems provided by DoonThaBrae (as per detailed briefing on the day)

  • Walking the trail stage after the race to collect tape and signs and ensure it is litter free.

Kit List

We will provide you:

  • a hi-vis vest

  • a VHF radio

  • a race timing device (for stage start or finish)

  • stop watch (for start stage)

  • bin bag

We ask you to dress appropriately for all weathers (incl. good footwear and layers, with a waterproof) and to bring:

  • wire cutters or scissors

  • rucksack

  • mobile phone

  • pen & paper).

We’d also suggest you consider bringing sun screen and bug spray, as well as a portable chair (and your best chat).
